J is for Jews

Many Jews converted to save their own lives. We are talking here about Jews who had lived for centuries in Spain and Portugal and who pretended to be Christians. Some of them embraced Christianity wholeheartedly. 

But some of them still practised Judaism in secret?

Yes and it was those seen to wash their hands before meals and light candles on Friday nights, who were discovered to be secret Jews.
